How did you come up with the concept for work?

I am working at computer graphics field, so, working in virtual world.

When I started to make “Meter Crawler”, I took part in an arduino workshop, and then I learned that how to move or control physical objects. I was wondering if it possible to make real daily objects animate like Luxo Jr. from Pixar studio, not in virtual world, but in the real world!! Daily objects animate like creature in the computer graphics, So, I thought that it might be possible to animate real objects in real world. Then I started the Meter Crawler project.

What were the biggest challenges in realising the project?

The biggest challenge was to get into the physical (real) world, starting to learn how to control a motor, sensor and so on.

It is still progressing. I wish that it react surroundings or viewer’s behavior. However, they are small and hard to put into all of mechanical stuff. This is the dilemma that how to realize.

How did you end up being an interactive creator/artist, where do you come from?

By accident. In 2001, I submitted my interactive work, called “Rakugaki” to Prix Ars Electronica, I received that Honorary Mention. That was the first time I made an interactive artwork. Since then, I keep doing.
