The 2013 winner of the Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN competition, the american sound sculptor Bill Fontana, began the first part of his residency at CERN this July 2013. Having been inspired by his 3 day induction visit in February, when he recorded sounds all around the Large Hadron Collider whilst it was running, he wanted to get down to work immediately. So a visit down into the LHC was a top priority – and you will see over the next few weeks what transpired down there. You may very well be surprised. It is just the beginning of a massive global project.
What will follow every Monday for the next 4 weeks is a video blog made during Bill’s first month of residency at CERN by Bill Fontana’s son, Michael, in which he interviewed both his father and Bill’s specially selected inspiration partner, CERN cosmologist Subodh Patil. This is one of the most important factors of the residency – the matching of the artist with an CERN scientist who can mutually inspire and challenge each other. This is done by the creator and director of the Collide@CERN programme, Ariane Koek, who is an experienced producer who has worked throughout her career across arts and science.
Watch out for the Monday postings, which will give you an insight into part of the creative journey at CERN in July between Bill Fontana and Subodh Patil. These video blogs will also be accompanied by photographs taken by Michael Fontana and Julian Calo, coordinator of the Collide@CERN programme, to give you extra insights.
