Video Mapping: Animations beyond the screen

tardy,

More than ten years ago, the French media artist Romain Tardy started to be a VJ for live visualizations of music in clubs and to experiment with animation at the same time. Meanwhile, he is an expert in video mapping and enriches three-dimensional objects such as historic buildings or unusual structures with his visualizations that he projects onto several large surfaces in public places. In his lecture “A Little Less Pictures, A Little More Space” at the  Expanded Animation symposium of the 2015 Ars Electronica Festival, he presented his previous and current works and talked about how difficult it is, to do all the concept, animation and calibration work for his video mappings in an often very short time:

„It’s not only about being spectacular. Of course, it’s easy to make things impressive because you are working at a very large scale.“

Video mapping, says Romain Tardy, gives the viewers the opportunity not to focus on one single point but to move around within the animation and to choose wherever you want to look at on this artwork that exists only for a short time.
