TWAN – The World at Night

Be amazed by the beauty of the night sky and gaze at the stars from Earth in deep space.

“The World at Night” (TWAN) is a worldwide project that draws attention to the beauty of our earth with impressive images of the night sky. It was founded in 2007 by the Iranian Babak A. Tafreshi together with Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) and received a strong boost in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy. Since then, under AWB’s motto “One People, One Sky”, photographers around the world have been photographing the sky above historical sites and imposing landscapes – to symbolize that the sight of the stars and planets connects us all. But the photographs not only show prominent places all over the world, they also give us an understanding of astronomical principles. They document planetary and stellar constellations as well as astronomical and atmospheric phenomena. Views we mostly could perceive with the naked eye, if it weren’t for the increasing light pollution that is blocking our view.
