The KET – Kids Experience Technology project is supported by the Province of Upper Austria and the regional Chamber of Commerce.

“How does it work? Why does that happen?” It’s kids’ nature to be curious and interested in the things going on around them. All they need is some time and the opportunity to observe, experiment and test. The KET – Kids Experience Technology exhibition created by the OTELO Association offers just that, and encourages youngsters age 4-8 to try out new things on their own.

Here, kids can take a playful, pressure-free approach to learning about scientific phenomena and technical applications. For instance, at the Light Colors station, they can experiment with three colored flashlights—red, green and blue—to discover what other colors they can create by combining them in different ways. And also find out what appears when they aim all three at the same spot (i.e. totally different hues than they’re used to from their experience with watercolors). Things get a bit more physical at the Energy station: here, young experimenters can raise up to 100 liters of water into an elevated container. When the outflow valve opens, the contents cascade down onto a waterwheel that, in turn, powers a machine the kids assemble themselves. The result: a simple, impressive demonstration of the principle of generating hydroelectric power.

KET made its first guest appearance at the Ars Electronica Center in February 2010 and got an enthusiastic reception from lots of kindergarten and elementary school pupils. Now, the Ars Electronica Center is hosting the premiere of a new edition of this traveling exhibition, and has also worked together with OTELO to design some new experimental stations.
