FabLab

Imagine a future in which you no longer buy gym shoes in a store; instead, you print them out at home, use them, and then toss them into the recycling bin when you’re done. What now seems like a weird futuristic vision could soon be reality. The idea behind FabLab (from fabrication) is the capability of downloading objects from the internet and printing them out at home. And not just on paper; as real stuff! A 3D printer uses a computer model to generate an actual object, and a computer-controlled laser cutter does the high-precision shaping of any chosen material. Using the internet makes it possible to disseminate designs for articles of clothing or pieces of furniture just as easily as sharing music and pictures today. What is indeed unimaginable is this technology’s impact on established industries. Visit our FabLab in conjunction with a workshop and experience the arts & crafts of tomorrow!

CATs
Íñigo Bilbao combines art and standard medical and industrial engineering tools. Computed Axial Tomography (CAT) is a medical imaging method to generate a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. These very same data can also be used for artistic purposes. The goal is to experiment w... more
Air-Drawing
A tracking system (Motion Capturing) registers your gestures and, via special software, transforms them into a three-dimensional object. This model can then be printed out with a 3D printer. Motion Capturing is utilized in animated films and computer games to breathe life into digital figures. Now, the FRONT design team has come up with an interesting application for this principle—designing... more
Fluid Forms - Your Unique Designs
"Fluid Forms" takes an original approach to implementing the concept of user-generated designs. To accomplish this, a user-friendly tool has been developed that enables anyone to create an individualized lamp or jewelry: a punching bag.
This device is peppered with sensors. Force and position of each blow-and hugs as well-are transmitted to the computer model of the punching bag. Ho... more

Our memories and feelings that are connected with these objects light up as well with "RGBy". Three LED lamps (red, green and blue) shine onto the selected surface. A color sensor registers how strongly the individual colors are re... more
