Die spanische Stiftung „Saragossa Stadt des Wissens“ („Zaragoza ciudad del conocimiento“) startete mit Unterstützung von Ars Electronica  in Saragossa das Programm PASEO PROJECT, um sich gemeinsam auf die Suche zu machen nach neuen kreativen Ideen der Kommunikation in und mit einer Stadt. Am Beispiel der Ars Electronica und ihren Einfluss auf Linz wurden in Form eines Symposiums weitere interessante Modelle vorgestellt, die von KünstlerInnen und kreativen TechnologInnen als Intervention für einen realen oder virtuellen Stadtraum erarbeitet wurden. Die Veranstaltung wurde auch genutzt um erstmals eine Ideenplattform zur Sammlung von neuen künstlerischen Projekten zu eröffnen und um lokale Kreativität im Zusammenspiel zwischen Kunst und Technologie, einer Stadt und ihren BürgerInnen zu bündeln. In einem Workshop Ende Juni trafen die Projektideen auf unterschiedliche Personen aus Saragossa  und drei der herausragendsten Projekte wurden prämiert. Herzlichen Dank an das österreichische Kulturforum in Madrid, die das Symposium kurzfristig unterstützen.

Die Jury vergab einen Preis an die künstlerische Sound-Intervention URBAN AUDIO von Florian Türcke (DE) sowie einen Preis für die herausragende Arbeit der Volksschule La Jota in Saragossa für Ihr Projekt CALLEJERO JOTERO (Street Map Jotero).  Der Publikumspreis ging an den spanischen Künstler Daniel Palacios und an das Projekt WHATEVER HAPPENED, HAPPENED.

The PASEO Project is initiated and organized by the The Fundación Zaragoza Ciudad del Conocimiento (Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation) and is supported by Ars Electronica Linz/Austria. The initial presentation of the project, an extensive panel, and the opening of the online idea platform will take place on March 27th and 28th 2012. The Foundation has been commissioned by the Zaragoza City Council to establish a ground for artistic and scientific innovation on the topics like new ways of city representation by interactive models, data networks / data visualization, augmented reality in the public realm, video mapping on public spaces and urban digital media.

The Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation aims to support different works on these topics within the next year that should be presented at the opening of the Centre for Art & Technology (CAT) at the Milla Digital (Digital Mile) area in Zaragoza (opening of the CAT is scheduled by the start of 2013).

In order to inform the public about the CAT´s aims, possibilities and future plans, and involving the citizens in upcoming engagement and dialogue possibilities and create a creative community already in advance of the opening of the CAT, the Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation has prepared this panel. A panel of outstanding examples of interest aimed at Zaragoza´s citizens and creators, and international experts. This panel, as well as the whole PASEO Project, has been conceived with the support of Ars Electronica Linz/Austria.

The first seminar will debut on March 27th evening with the key note by Gerfried Stocker, artistic director of Ars Electronica Linz, open for all public interested. Gerfried Stocker will focus on the example of Linz and how Ars Electronica influenced and transformed the city.

Ars Electronica and its influence on the pulse of Linz

an opening lecture by Gerfried Stocker  on March 27th 2012 at 7pm at the Escuela de Artes de Zaragoza (Maria Zambrano, 1-3, Zaragoza)

 Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria has been an internationally successful cultural venue, research facility, cyberarts competition and educational institution for more than 33 years now. Ars Electronica diversified activities are based on a global network of artists, researchers and scientists, and in fact, it`s precisely this interplay of bold, creative experimentation, artistic talent paired with technological expertise, and a process of scientific and social reflection that has enabled Ars Electronica to achieve international acclaim as the benchmark institution in contemporary digital art and media culture.

Ars Electronica has also become a significant source of inspiration in the process of cultural and economic change that has been underway locally in the city of Linz. As a result, Linz has come to epitomize the model municipality, whose orientation on the future is not just a question of commerce and industry, but rather one that is envisioned primarily as a cultural or artistic work and also serves as a prototype for urban renewal and cultural policy development options that go beyond tourism and traditionalism.

Susanne Jaschko

Dr Susanne Jaschko (*1967) is a Berlin based independent curator, author and lecturer. Susanne Jaschko studied art history, history of architecture and linguistics at the RWTH Aachen, Germany. Her doctorate thesis dealt with self-portraiture and self-understanding in GDR painting between 1949 and the 1980s. Between March 2008 and May 2009, she was head of presentation and of the artist in residence program at the Netherlands Media Art Institute in Amsterdam. From1997 – 2004 Jaschko was curator, then deputy director of the transmediale festival for art and digital culture in Berlin. Next to her curatorial work she has taught on an academic level in Germany and abroad, was jury member for Prix Ars Electronica and she regularly speaks at conferences as well as publishes on themes related to her curatorial practice.

In her overview presentation, Susanne Jaschko will focus on her recent research activities: Over the past decade, public spaces have been settings of a growing variety of artistic interventions—both with and without new technologies—in the urban fabric. This interventionist art practice has flourished on the basis of increasing acceptance of performative and processual artworks by citizens, cultural institutions and, in numerous instances, city councils. However, in light of budget cuts throughout the European cultural landscape and a reemerging desire for socially sustained and engaging art, today’s and tomorrow’s challenges lie in the creation of art processes that integrate themselves into the individual social, political and cultural dynamics of cities. While this practice noticeably blurs the boundaries between art and life, and still faces some critique that accuses it of being too utilitarian and instrumental, artists as well as the commissioning bodies have to amass more knowledge and build structures that support the production and long-term implementation of art processes. This presentation will look at examples of interventionist art and art processes, and try to outline some of the core principles of participatory and community-driven projects.

Pablo Valbuena

Pablo Valbuena (Madrid, 1978) develops artistic projects and research focused on space, time and perception. Some key elements of the construction of his work are the overlap of physical and virtual space, the generation of mental spaces by the viewer, the dissolution of the limit between real and perceived, the unity of time and space or the use of light and projection as a the prime matter of his work.

In his talk he will present his large site-specific interventions in the public space, which have been seen in The Hague City Hall (the Netherlands), Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico City), Plaza de las Letras-Medialab Prado (Madrid), Murcia City Hall (Spain) or Vooruit-Ghent University (Belgium) as well as some ideas that interests him related to architecture and the city.

Eduardo Estopiñán is R&D Manager at ARSTIC Audivisual Solutions. ARSTIC Audiovisual Solutions is a creative and technological consulting company from Zaragoza, specialized in audio, video, lighting and interactivity, targeted mainly to the union between artistic creativity and technological innovation.

ARSTIC presents the possibilities offered by new audiovisual and interactive technologies in arts and participatory interventions in urban spaces. Samples of some projects such as the development of interactive control of the Digital Water Pavilion, ephemeral installations like Virtual Graffiti or training activities such as Videomapping Workshop at Zaragoza Activa, will be shown.

Stefan Mittlböck – Jungwirth – Fohringer

Stefan Mittlböck – Jungwirth – Fohringer is holding a degree in Fine Art and is having a technical background as electrician. He is member of the Ars Electronica Futurelab since 2001. Since 2009 he is director of the media art and architecture group at Ars Electronica Futurelab. In his talk Stefan Mittlböck- Jungwirth- Fohringerwill focus on media facade projects, interactive city models, telematic public art projects and art in public place (including mobile device projects and other technological interfaces in/for cities), realized with the support or by Ars Electronica Futurelab.

José Luis de Vicente

José Luis de Vicente is a cultural researcher, curator and writer, currently directs the Visualizar Program on Data Culture at Medialab Prado (Madrid) and is one of the founders of ZZZINC, a consultancy for research and innovation in cultural institutions and the creative sector. Previously he has been deputy director of ArtFutura, Spain’s first festival of Art and Technology, associated curator at the acclaimed Sonar Festival for Advanced Music and Multimedia Art and program curator for OFFF. Recent curation projects include the exhibitions Playtime: Videogame Mythologies (Maison d’Ailleurs, Switzerland, 2012), Invisible Fields: Geographies of Radio Waves (Arts Santa Monica, Barcelona, in coproduction with Lighthouse Arts, 2011) and Habitar (LABoral Art Center, Gij
